Kings Langley and
Bakau Together
The Link was started
in 1997 when a group in Kings Langley came together to consider the possibility
of linking with a community in the developing world. A wide cross section
from within the village expressed their support and after initial enquiries
were made with the Local Government International Bureau details of the
community in Bakau were obtained. From this we discovered that our aims
and theirs were much the same, that is we wanted to understand each other's
culture better. We wanted to affirm that there was something enriching in
bringing people from different cultures together to share their background,
beliefs and also their needs and to see what can be accomplished together.
Throughout the project's life individuals and groups have exchanged cards, letters, gifts and it has also been the inspiration for others to make their own contacts. It has been of particular benefit to have the schools, churches and Parish Council involved in various ways. We are not primarily an aid project, recognizing that others are better placed to undertake this. However we recognize the disparity in resources and seek to respond as friends do when they see another in need. As a result we have taken small tokens of friendship and this has been the means of facilitating greater contact and understanding of our partner's situation.
